Amy Massey, a Professional Engineer with Kimley-Horn and Associates, is no stranger to the transformative potential of infrastructure and economic development.

In her nearly 30 years with the Raleigh-based firm, she’s seen – and helped plan and guide – significant change across the I-77 corridor and beyond, predominantly around her home base in York County.

Over that time, the dedication that Massey and Kimley-Horn have shown to delivering tailored transportation solutions and active involvement with the S.C. I-77 Alliance exemplifies the impact of committed, forward-thinking professionals on regional growth.

Kimley-Horn, a nationally recognized planning and design consulting practice, specializes in innovative transportation and infrastructure projects. Within the I-77 Corridor, the firm’s portfolio includes more than 500 projects across York County, from the redevelopment of downtown Rock Hill’s historic Woolworth Building to significant highway interchanges like I-77 Exits 85 and 88.

These projects not only improve traffic flow but also create a foundation for economic development by enhancing accessibility and connectivity for businesses and residents alike. The firm also, as just one more example, is now partnering with the Central Midlands Council of Governments to prepare a plan for reducing traffic congestion on the busiest roadways in and around Columbia.

A Crucial Role in Providing Necessary Elements

Massey’s expertise and experience, particularly in transportation planning and traffic engineering, has built her appreciation for the importance of collaboration among stakeholders of all stripes, including Kimley-Horn’s commitment as an investor in the S.C. I-77 Alliance.

“The Alliance plays a crucial role ensuring that the necessary elements of a successful community are in place. Being part of this team is essential to staying connected to what’s next and being part of the excitement,” she says.

A Gaston County local, graduate of N.C. State, and 25+ year resident of Tega Cay, Massey’s history with economic development extends back to her work on the Textile Corridor Master Plan in Rock Hill, which paved the way for the now-thriving University Center.

Her work, meanwhile, as a York County Economic Development Board member developed her belief in the intersection of transportation and land use planning as a driver for sustainable growth. She’s now in her third term on the SC I-77 Alliance board where she represents York County’s private sector.

Massey serves on the Alliance’s investor relations and nominating committees, further deepening her and Kimley-Horn’s partnership with the organization.

Why the I-77 Corridor Stands Out

Massey emphasizes the corridor’s inherent strengths as a hub for economic opportunity. “With more than 3 million people in the combined metro regions of Charlotte and Columbia, the I-77 Corridor offers a well-educated, diverse workforce, and top-tier transportation infrastructure. This makes it attractive for businesses looking to expand or establish operations,” she explained, noting Kimley-Horn’s own recent office opening in Fort Mill to better serve the growing region.

The corridor’s mix of urban centers, rural landscapes, and robust logistics capabilities – from airports to seaports – positions it as a top contender for industries such as manufacturing, technology, and

renewable energy. As the area continues to grow, Massey sees ample opportunities to enhance local communities with economic opportunities while maintaining a high quality of life for residents.

Massey’s optimistic outlook aligns with the Alliance’s mission to help facilitate sustainable economic development. “There’s incredible momentum across the region, and transportation plays a critical role in that progress. We’re proud to be part of the team shaping the corridor’s future,” she says.
